The article analyzes the study of Buddhism in Vietnam according
to Russian and Vietnamese research sources. The authors pay particular
attention to such branch of Buddhism as Mahayana, because it is widely spread
in the region. The article reveals the originality of Vietnamese Buddhism and
the transformation of the concept of nirvana. The authors came to the
conclusion that Buddhism developed in stages, each time introducing nuances
into the concept of nirvana and liberation. Buddhism had a long way of
searching and developing, meeting the needs of a person and society:from the
position of moving away from ordinary life which was proposed in early Buddhism
to the Mahayana concept of active participation in life.
